Loop trails start and end at the same location and follow a single trail or multiple trails to form a loop.

An out and back trail is a trail that goes from point A (generally the trailhead) to point B then back to point A along the same path. If the hiking trail is 2.5 miles, and it’s an out and back trail, then you know your total hike will be 5 miles.

Point-to-Point Trails
Trails that start and end in different locations. These routes are often part of a multi-day hiking or backpacking trip or segments of a long distance trail such as the Appalachian Trail or Pacific Crest Trail.
